11 FAMILIES OF SAVIOURS OF JEWS HONOURED IN LITHUANIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICE
Vilnius, April 28 (ELTA) - On Monday, 11 families which risking their own lives saved the Jews from the Nazis during the Second World War were commemorated at the Righteous among the Nations award ceremony in the Government Office. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius who attended the ceremony noted that the Righteous among the Nations completed an unprecedented feat and returned those condemned in the Second World War the primary right of a person, the right to live.
The head of the Government quoted the Jewish saying that "whoever saves one life, saves the entire world", the words which are inscribed in the decoration of the Righteous among the Nation.
At the ceremony, awards to the Righteous were presented by Ambassador of Israel to Lithuania Hagit Ben-Yaakov. A person who is acknowledged the Righteous among the Nation is presented an honorary diploma and a medal.
The event was also attended by Chair of the Jewish Community of Lithuania Faina Kukliansky, guests from Israel and participants of the March of the Living.
By 19 March 2014, 872 Lithuanian citizens have been acknowledged the Righteous among the Nations.
