85 YEAR ANIVERSARY OF THE FAMOUS YIDISH SINGER, EMIGRANT FROM LITHUANIA, COMMEMORATED IN ISRAEL
On the 9th October 2012, commemoration of eighty-five-year anniversary of the famous Yiddish singer, emigrant from Lithuania, and a Chairwoman of the Nechama Lifshitz took place. The event was attended by representatives of the Association of Vilna and Vilna vicinity Jews in Israel Beit Vilna, representatives of the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel, and emigrants from Lithuania.
Counselor of the Lithuanian Embassy in Israel Violeta Popovaitė read to the participants of the event a congratulatory letter by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania A. Gelūnas by which he thanks N. Lifshitz for her contribution in presenting and promotion of Yiddish culture in the world, and conveys respect for her long-term performance and talent.
N. Lifshitz was born in Kaunas. During the World War II she was gone to the Uzbek territory. After the war returned to Vilnius and graduated from the Vilnius Conservatory (now – Academy of Music). In 1951, she started an active career as the Yiddish singer, in 1969 emigrated to Israel. In 2006. N. Lifshitz was elected as a Chairwoman of the World Council for Yiddish Culture.
