A BOOK ON LITVAKS FROM ZAGARE PRESENTED IN JERUSALEM
On 25 March 2014 the book „Zagare: Litvaks and Lithuanians Confront the Past“ by Sara Manobla was presented in Ein Karem musical centre in Jerusalem.
During the event, Sara Manobla said that the purpose of this book was to present history of Zagare Litvak community. In her book the author talks about the tragic history of destruction of Zagare Litvak community, about the people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and Zagare’s efforts to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Sara Manobla completes her book with the positive remarks about the new trust-based relationship between Lithuanian and Jewish people.
Counsellor of the Lithuanian Embassy in Tel Aviv Violeta Popovaite thanked the author for the great work and said that preservation of the cultural heritage of the Lithuanian Jewish community and commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust for the Lithuanian Government is a matter of extreme importance. V. Popovaitė also presented the actions intended by the Lithuanian Government to honor the memory of the Lithuanian Jewish community.
The author of the book Sara Manobla is closely related to Zagare where her ancestors were from. Famous people such as one of the best-known New York Times columnists Roger Cohen as well as a founder and owner of one of the biggest South African companies Bidvest (food products, services, etc.) Brian Joffe are among the litvaks descended from Zagare.
