ARVYDAS SABONIS IN ISRAEL TO PROMOTE EUROBASKET 2011
On 27 April the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the State of Israel organized an event on the occasion of forthcoming European Basketball Championship 2011 („EuroBasket 2011“) which will take place in Lithuania in September 2011.
Government representatives, sport, business, culture and academic elite, diplomatic corps, journalists, Litvaks and Lithuanian community representatives who have gathered for the event were welcomed by „EuroBasket 2011“ official ambassador Arvydas Sabonis.
"This is a big day for our country, after 72 years basketball is coming back to Lithuania", said Lithuanian legendary basketball player.
In his welcome speech the ambassador of Lithuania Darius Degutis said he was very pleased that Lithuanian basketball has many fans in Israel and invited Israelis to visit Lithuania and support Israel National team which will be playing in Šiauliai.
On behalf of Israeli government the guests were greeted by Danny Ayalon, Deputy Foreign Minister of Israel, who has highly appreciated friendly and intensive Israeli-Lithuanian relations.
In the morning of 27 April at Olympic Committee „EuroBasket 2011“ was presented to Israeli media. On 28 April Arvydas Sabonis is scheduled to meet with Israel's President Shimon Peres.
The trip to Israel is the sixth in Sabonis‘ capacity as the “EuroBasket 2011” official ambassador. Sabonis has already visited Slovenia, Great Britain, Germany, Russia and Spain.
