FAMOUS RESIDENTS OF VILNIUS CALL TO REVIVE THE OLD TRADITIONS OF THE CAPITAL

The forthcoming holidays bring with it not only an opportunity to remember the closest people, but also the people of other nationalities. The history of the capital of Lithuania dates back to times when Vilnius residents of different nationalities used to gather around the communal feast table. During Chanukkah - one of the most important Jewish holidays - citizens of Vilnius were usually feasting on potato pancakes and jam-filled doughnuts. This year three famous Vilnius citizens - Agnė Zuokienė, Edita Mildažytė and Emanuelis Zingeris - urged to revive this tradition in Vilnius.
This year over 24 cafes in the old town of Vilnius decided to revive this tradition and included potato pancakes into their menus.
Chanukkah is a lunar holiday that remembers the Jewish victory over the Greek and Syrian conquerors and the liberation of Jerusalem. "This year we will try to invite people to join this beautiful tradition. We do not expect a huge amount of visitors, but who knows, maybe in a year or so, both peoples will enjoy traditional pancakes during the Chanukkah. It is important to cherish the multicultural heritage - we have Karaites, Tatars, Jews, Belarusians, Poles, and Russian traditions – let’s discover them for ourselves and others! Let their festival become important for us,"- said Member of the Parliament, wife of Vilnius Mayor Agnė Zuokienė.
