Aiming to improve the system of representing Lithuania’s economic interests abroad the Ministry of Economy has proposed to establish the function of a commercial attaché at the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Lithuania to the State Israel, which proposal was approved at the Government’s meeting on 22 June 2011.

The established commercial attaché is expected to help promote export of Lithuanian goods and services to Israel, attract foreign directs investments to Lithuania, promote tourism and timely address issues of relevance to the Lithuanian business community.

In January – April 2011, Israel ranked 47 among 170 Lithuania’s foreign trade partners by trade turnover, 42 - by export, and 47 - by import.

In January – April 2011, as compared to the corresponding period of 2010, the turnover of goods between Lithuania and Israel increased by 106.8% (more than twice as compared to the corresponding period of 2010), export - by 121.7% and import – by 83.5%.

Besides, Israel is among Lithuania’s priority tourism markets. In 2010, the number of Israel citizens who visited Lithuania increased by 12% as compared to 2009, and in the 1st quater of 2011 – by 56% as compared to the same period of 2010.
