GENOCIDE VICTIMS OF LITHUANIAN JEWS HONORED IN VILNIUS, JERUSALEM
Degutiene, Culture Minister Arunas Gelunas, vice-ministers of foreign affairs and national defense, foreign ambassadors attended a ceremony at the memorial in Vilnius on Tuesday. A memorial event took place in Jerusalem a day earlier.
"Pain is burning in the eyes of living eyewitnesses of the Holocaust and their family members, however, I believe that their hearts still cherish the belief in those who concealed and and rescued them from death," Degutiene said at the ceremony in Vilnius.
During the event, a wreath was laid at the memorial on behalf of Grybauskaite who said that the day was a history lesson taught from generation to generation.
An event to commemorate the Day of Lithuanian Jews Genocide also took place at the Yad Vashem memorial of Holocaust victims in Jerusalem.
During a ceremony organized by Lithuania's Embassy to Israel in cooperation with the Israeli Association of Vilnius and Vilnius Region Jews on Sept. 20, Lithuania's Ambassador to Israel Darius Degutis laid a wreath at the memorial in the Hall of Memory. Yiddish-language songs were performed by the Litvak choir Vilnius during the event.
Sept. 23 is marked as the Day of Lithuanian Jews Genocide to mark the Nazi destruction of the Vilnius ghetto in 1943.
