History awareness discussed at the Lithuanian Embassy in Tel Aviv

On January 22 Ambassador of Lithuania in Israel Mr. Edminas Bagdonas received head of “Mission Siberia” Arnoldas Fokas. During the meeting national history awareness and patriotism in Lithuania and Israel were discussed.

The goals of the “Mission Siberia” includes the following: foster national history awareness and patriotism among youth; commemoration of the memory of the confined countrymen in Siberia; according to the capabilities of the expedition help to clean and tidy up the graves and tombs of the exiled.

On the 14th of June 1941 the massive process of exile by the Soviet Union started in Lithuania. In just first three days – 14th, 15th and 16th of June more than 17,000 of citizens of Lithuania had been exiled. Throughout the 11 year period of exile more than 130,000 people were exiled, more than 150,000 citizens were confined in various concentration camps. More than 2/3 of the exiled have survived. 80,000 of them came back to Lithuania by 1960 and all of the others stayed in Siberia. In total more than 100,000 have died or been killed in Lithuania and abroad during the exile period.
