JEWS OF LITHUANIA THANK STATE LEADERS FOR SINCERE ATTENTION
VILNIUS, Sep 25, BNS – The Jewish Community of Lithuania on Wednesday publicly thanked state leaders for the sincere attention to the 70-year anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius ghetto. "The Jewish Community of Lithuania and the 4th World Litvak Congress thank the state leaders of Lithuania for their sincere attention to the Jews of Lithuania and Litvaks of the world," the community's leader Faina Kukliansky said in a comment.
"We thank the state leaders for their understanding that the liquidation of the Vilnius ghetto is a tragedy and loss of all of Lithuania. Recognition of historic truth is the most important to the Jews of Lithuania in tribute to the Holocaust victims in Lithuania," she said.
The ghetto liquidation anniversary was commemorated at the President's Office, the parliament and the Paneriai Memorial earlier this week, with the 4th World Litvak Congress held on the occasion.
Among participants of the events were President Dalia Grybauskaite, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas.
The president said that the Litvaks – Jews originating from the historic Lithuania – have always been and will be part of our common history, urging "to recreate what we can and to remember what we can no longer bring back."
"The history of Lithuanian Jews and the Holocaust must take its proper place in our memory and in our school textbooks," Grybauskaite said.
