LITHUANIA'S PRIME MINISTER ANDRIUS KUBILIUS IS STARTING A VISIT IN ISRAEL

Lithuania's Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius is on Sunday starting his official visit in Israel in an effort to improve bilateral relations, get first-hand information on the security situation in the Middle East and Israel and hunt for investments to the high-tech sector.
"The joint Lithuanian and Litvak heritage and history, which included a tragedy and centuries of fruitful and enriching cooperation is our point of reference. The second goal is to get a closer look at the security situation in the Middle East region and Israel. It is important that Lithuania, which has a military mission in Afghanistan, is involved in the solution of the region's security policy, although the scope is moderate," Kubilius said on the eve of the visit.
The Lithuanian prime minister is scheduled to meet with Israel's President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, Knesset opposition leader Tzipi Livni, Israeli Bank manager Stanley Fischer, the prime minister's press service has said.
On Sunday, visits are planned with Israel's minister for industry and trade, intelligence and nuclear energy, and the leader of the Roman Catholic Church Fouad Twal and heads of Israeli companies.
Lithuanian and Israeli governmental officials are expected to sign an agreement on the private sector's cooperation in industrial research and experimental development.
The agenda for Sunday also includes opening ceremony of an exhibition on Spiritual Resistance of Jews and award the Lithuanian national culture.
During the visit that will end on Thursday, Kubilius is also due to deliver a lecture to Israel's academic community on Lithuania's strategic vision "Lithuania 2030" and award the Lithuanian national culture and arts prize to writer Icchokas Meras.
