MARKING THE ANNIVERSARY OF VILNIUS GHETTO LIQUIDATION

On April 23, the Prime MInister's Cabinet has approved the Vilnius Ghetto Commemoration Plan for 2013, with a view to marking the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto and paying tribute to the memory of the Holocaust victims in Lithuania.

The following events have been planned for September this year: a solemn event for the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of Vilnius Ghetto, a concert by the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, a solemn ceremony honouring the victims of the Holocaust at the Paneriai Memorial, the fourth global congress of Litvaks “Historical Role of the Litvaks in Lithuania and their Prospects in the Diaspora”, a discussion on the Holocaust and its historical significance internationally, involving ambassadors from the European Union, US, Canada, Japan and other countries posted in Lithuania.

There will also be other events held across the country, including concerts, performances, exhibitions, publications, educational projects, unveiling of memorial plaques to perpetuate the memory of those who fell victims to the Holocaust in Vilnius Ghetto and overall in Lithuania. Solemn tribute ceremonies will be held not only in Vilnius but also in Klaipėda, Kaunas, Kėdainiai, Kretinga, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Ukmergė, Švenčionys.

Through Seimas resolution, the year 2013 has been dedicated to the commemoration of the Vilnius Ghetto.
