MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA PAYS A VISIT TO ISRAEL
On June 21 Minister of Education and Science Gintaras Steponavičius visited Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem, where he met with museum's chairman Avner Shalev and representatives of International School for Holocaust Studies. During a conversation a special emphasis was put on Holocaust education in Lithuania. A. Shalev commended the work done in this field in Lithuania; in addition he evaluated the centers of tolerance involved in the implementation of Holocaust education program.
Yad Vashem chairman appreciated a law passed by Seimas on compensation to Jewish religious communities.
A. Shalev confirmed Yad Vashem’s intention to continue the cooperation with Lithuania, inviting Lithuanian history teachers to participate in special seminars in Israel. Yad Vashem chairman intends to participate in projects related to commemoration of the Holocaust victims in Lithuania. The Minister also unveiled details of the program dedicated to commemorate the Holocaust victims in Lithuania.
G. Steponavičius made a tour in the Holocaust memorial museum and laid a wreath at the Holocaust memorial hall.
Minister of Education and Science will participate in President Shimon Peres initiated conference "Facing Tomorrow" and EUREKA - European Research, Development and Co-operation Program - 25th anniversary events.
Today, June 22 G. Steponavičius is paying a visit to IBM Haifa research center. During the visit, cooperation between IBM and Lithuanian research and higher education institutions will be discussed.
