MP PROPOSES TO PROCLAIM 2011 YEAR FOR REMEMBRANCE OF HOLOHAUST VICTIMS IN LITHUANIA
VILNIUS, Dec 03, BNS Emanuelis Zingeris of the Seimas conservatives proposed that the parliament adopts a resolution proclaiming year 2011 that for remembrance of holocaust victims in Lithuania.
The draft piece of legislation also proposed that the Seimas condemns the genocide against the Jewish people during the Nazi occupation carried out by the Nazis and their collaborators.
The loss of Lithuania's Jewry during the Nazi occupation is a major tragedy in our shared history, the draft says, also acknowledging the extent to which Lithuanian Jews contributed to the establishment of the state of Lithuania, the significance of the Litvak culture and the importance of historic justice both for the state of Lithuania and its people.
The resolution calls on the government to prepare over 2010 a state program for remembrance of holocaust victims, for fellow citizens who fought fascism and those who took part in rescuing Jews and for memorializing the heritage of Jewish history and culture in Lithuania.
The draft piece of legislation also calls for attention towards educating the public and the country's youth about the holocaust and include the academic community and NGOs in this activity.
