OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION "THE LAST WOODEN SYNAGOGUES"
The Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum kindly invites you to the opening of the exhibition “The Last Wooden Synagogues” of the paintings by Gilles Vuillard on 3 March 2011, 6 pm at the Tolerance Center (Naugarduko g. 10/2, Vilnius).
The Lithuanian-based French artist Gilles Vuillard strives to attract attention to the fast disappearing objects of the unique cultural heritage with his works – the wooden synagogues – and the historical-cultural importance of these building that are in bad repair. The last remaining vestiges of the Litvaks’ culture in Lithuania are disappearing together with the architecture of the Jewish wooden houses of worship.
In his works, the artist places emphasis on the beauty and architectural value of the wooden buildings. Vuillard unites the contemporary figurative trend and the means of expression employed by the Barbizon School artists, the Russian Peredvizhniks and American regionalists. The buildings seem alive; the wooden synagogues glow with the strokes of the brush of sunny, shimmering warm colours. He creates a parallel between history, architecture, landscape and social life. Some paintings are almost abstract, like the one depicting the burning synagogue in Pakruojis (it was set on fire in 2009).
The exhibition will be open until 14 April 2011 (temporarily closed from 21 to 27 March 2011).
