On November 19th the premiere screening of the Lithuanian film “Ghetto” was performed in the World Jewish Film Festival “Jewish Eye”, which this year takes place in Ashkelon. This film, based on the popular play of the famous Israeli playwright Joshua Sobol, is co-produced with Germany. The feature film is based on true events of the years of the war. The action is set in Vilnius ghetto (1942-1943) during the years of Nazi occupation.

The festival “Jewish Eye” is the fourth international Jewish Film Festival, and the films are selected by the special committee. During this festival 80 films will be screened and festival jury will nominate the winning films in the following categories: cinema films, documentary features, and television films.

The film tells a fatal and extremely tragic story of passionate love and terrible hatred that started between a Nazi officer – former actor and jazz musician, and a Jewish girl – a star of the musical world. Due to this fatal love a theatre is founded in the Vilnius ghetto.

Lithuanian Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė cordially greeted the abundant audience of the premiere screening. Audrius Juzėnas, the producer and Joshua Sobol, screenplay writer, who specially arrived to the event, shared their thoughts about the film, and the motives of creation. 

The audience stayed in the hall after the screening, and Meir Ouziel, a popular Israeli journalist and the master of ceremonies, duly reacted to the situation and enabled the curious spectators to ask A. Juzėnas and J. Sobol questions. The latters answered the numerous questions with the skill of the master and did not try to conceal their satisfaction with the sincere and responsive reaction of the audience to the moving film.

Embassy of Lithuania in Israel and Litvakes Foundation in Lithuania sponsored the presentation of the film and the attendance of the director A. Juzėnas at the festival.
