RED SYNAGOGUE IN JONIŠKIS UNDER RESTORATION

    The Red synagogue - one of the oldest buildings in Joniškis in under restoration. According to Joniškis’ municipality specialist of heritage Dovilė Skudraitė, 800 thousand Litas has already been spent on repair works of the synagogue:  new windows and doors have been installed, foundation has been repaired, and the eastern wall has been rebuilt. By coming summer the interior of the synagogue should be repaired, engineering network replaced, heating and water-supply system should be fixed. The total cost of the project is 1 million 800 thousand Litas. After full restoration a museum will be established in the Red synagogue, where, among other things, Jewish heritage will be displayed. The Red synagogue, which was built in 1865, belongs to the Joniškis’ synagogue complex. According to the experts, only a few such complexes remained in Europe.
