STATEMENT ON THE RADICAL RALLY HELD IN VILNIUS ON 11 MARCH 2011

16 March 2011

Vilnius

The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania,

Strictly condemning the rally held by radicals in Vilnius on 11 March 2011,

Notes that this rally destroys confidence in the very purpose and idea of the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence and its participants are clearly demonstrating disrespect for the state of Lithuania and its history;

Reminds that democratic values, ethnic tolerance and consistent respect for human and civil rights are the fundamental values underpinning the declaration of 11 March 1990 by the Lithuanian nation on the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania and the ensuing building of civil society resting on democratic patriotism and political awareness as well as guaranteeing equal rights for the people of different nationalities, opinions and beliefs, and

Calls on the authorities and civil society of the Republic of Lithuania to ensure the adherence to the principles of the rule of law and zero tolerance for any manifestations of extremism and radicalism in Lithuanian society.
