The International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27 is approaching. We invite all the TECs and all the educational institutions to join the project “The Butterflies.” This project will contribute to the commemoration of 1.5 million Jewish children who died during the Holocaust.

Before the International Holocaust Remembrance Day we invite all the people to concentrate their thoughts on the tragic destiny of the most vulnerable fraction of Jewish society. During WWII in the territory of Lithuania together with their parents were murdered thousands of Jewish children. Those who were left alive suffered imprisonment in Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai, Ghettos. Unfortunately, many of them by to the occupational authorities were denounced ”useless” and doomed to extermination.

In order to commemorate the tragic fate of Lithuanian Jewish children we encourage all the school communities to join the project “The Butterflies” and make some butterflies which symbolise Jewish children who perished during the Holocaust. Handmade butterflies will be exhibited at the republican exhibition in Radviliškis Vaižgantas Progymnasium, 3^rd February, 2012.

In an effort to memorialize the 1.5 million Jewish children who died during the Holocaust, the Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies for a special exhibit in 2012.

The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for spring 2014, for all to remember. The Museum has already collected an estimated 900,000 butterflies.

For over 15 years children and school groups from around the world joined together in a project to learn more about the dangers of hatred, prejudices and apathy, about the importance of individual responsibility.

 As a sign of solidarity with Holocaust Museum Houston this year the project will be implemented in Lithuania. It was initiated by the Secretariat of The International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania and Radviliškis Vaižgantas Progymnasium.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, is an international memorial day for the victims of the Holocaust, the genocide that resulted in the annihilation of 6 million European Jews and millions of others by the Nazi regime. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005 during the 42nd plenary session. The resolution came after a special session was held earlier that year on 24 January, 2005 during which the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the Holocaust.
