THE DAY OF GENOCIDE OF LITHUANIAN JEWS COMMEMORATED IN JERUSALEM

On September 23, 2008 the Embassy of Lithuania in Israel commemorated the Day of Genocide of Lithuanian Jews at the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem. Ambassador Asta Skaisgiryte Liauskiene laid a wreath at the Ponar monument and honoured the memory of the Shoah victims. Duly respect was paid to those who rescued Jews during the Holocaust risking their own lives. At present, there are over 700 Lithuanian citizens who are recognized as Righteous among the Nations by the Yad Vashem.

The day of September 23 was introduced by the Lithuanian Government in 1994 to commemorate the tragic destiny of the Lithuanian Jewry during the WWII.
