THE DAY OF GENOCIDE OF LITHUANIAN JEWS COMMEMORATED IN YAD VASHEM

On September 22, 2009 the Embassy of Lithuania in Israel in cooperation with the Association of Vilna Jews and the Vicinity in Israel commemorated the Day of Genocide of Lithuanian Jews at the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem.

 

In memory of the victims of WWII genocide Lithuanian ambassador Darius Degutis laid a wreath in the Remembrance Hall of Yad Vashem memorial. Yuli Edelstein, Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs of Israel, ambassador Darius Degutis (speech), Director General of Yad Vashem  Nathan Eitam and chairman of the Association of Lithuanian Jews Michael Shemiavitz made speaches at the memorial ceremony.

 

Minister Yuli Edelsten spoke highly of his meetings with the Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and other officials in August of this year and highly appreciated endeavours of the government of Lithuania in dealing with the problems acute to the Lithuanian Jewish community.

 

Dr. Lea Prais from International Institute for Holocaust research at Yad Vashem gave a lecture “The Vilna ghetto- another perspective”. The memorial service also included musical performances of the choir of Vilnius Ghetto survivors.
