THE MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST VICTIMS IN LITHUANIA HONORED IN TEL AVIV

On 8 April, 2013 a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of the Holocaust in Lithuania was held at Tel Aviv Kiriat Shaul cemetery memorial. The commemoration was organized by the association of Jews from Vilnius and Vicinity in Israel – Beit Vilna.

The solemn commemoration was attended by the Holocaust survivors, their families, representatives of Israeli defense forces and scout organizations cooperating with Beit Vilna.

Lithuanian Ambassador Darius Degutis paid tribute to those who perished during the Holocaust. In his remarks the Ambassador stressed the importance of remembering and honoring painful and tragic pages of  the history of Lithuania. He also noted the dedication of Lithuania and its people to build the future of Lithuanian-Jewish relations based on mutual trust and goodwill.

Ambassador Degutis told about the ongoing fifth “March of the Living” in Lithuania and invited the Litvak community of Israel to participate in the World Litvak Congress (to be held on September 22-25, 2013) which will also mark the 70 years of the liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto. Ambassador Degutis noted that the Lithuanian government pays special attention to the awareness of commemoration of the Holocaust memory in Lithuania and preservation of the history and cultural heritage of the Lithuanian Jews.
